Creating Your Business Plan

Your overall business plan should include from your broad overall goals down through to specific actions that need to be taken on a plan to forward that goal.

You would plan strategically on the higher levels and tactically when taking actions to forward your strategy.

There are sets of clearly defined actions that need to be executed against a timeline to forward smaller portions of your plan and by completing larger and larger sections of these actions your goals moves forward in time into completion and materialization.

Results of actions taken on the lower levels are constantly measured to ensure they are on track to achieve the main goal and adjusted as necessary to arrive at the goal in the shortest time possible with maximum use of existing resources.

The plan is thought out fully and completely in advance and completely written up. Every division involved in the organization, whether a one man operation or employing thousands of employees will get their portion of actions necessary to execute the plan and as actions are accomplished, they are coordinated seamlessly with the Master Plan, all forwarding the goal in the most efficient manner.

From the overall goal, we descend into the purposes for that goal and into policies of the organization and then we write the overall plan which breaks down into smaller portions called programs.

Each line of a program is further broken down into projects and projects are broken down into orders to be executed by defined persons against a timeline. This forwards the goal on an orderly manner with full coordination amongst the actions taken for maximum efficiency.

An Ideal Scene is maintained which describes how things look like if everything was going perfectly. Statistics are kept for all divisions of the organization indicating how far the actions are from the Ideal Scene, enabling fine tuning of further actions taken on a regular basis to keep the plan moving towards the goal and not allowing it to get off track.

A Valueable Final Product is established which is a cumulation of all products produced by the orgainzation's divisions enabling exchange and reaching of the goal and the overall purposes behind the goal.

Knight Mitchell will work with your organization to develop your overall plan and set up your organization's divisions to deliver and accurately measure the sub-products necessary to achieve the overall Valuable Final Product of your Organization.

  • To engage in business you need to plan out exactly what needs to be done, when and by which person or department. A1 Universal  can help you develop your extensive business plan. Your plan will guide you and keep you focused and on track as you progress through the confusions that can result from busy expansion.

  • Macro planning refers to planning your major over all functions and micro planning refers to detailed planning of smaller functions. Your over all plan then breaks into smaller sections which consist of actions that need to be taken plotted against timelines for execution. All activities are geared to fit within existing resources and budgets so that they are feasible.

  • Research is a necessary factor in creating your plan, so that you know the facts and details associated with your business. You need to know exactly what you are doing, how much you need to do on each part of your plan and what results are expected from your actions.

  • It pays to plan well in advance and think things through and look at all the things that might come up as you go along. This way you have direction and know where you are going as you reach each milestone of your business plan.

  • Many businesses don’t do a comprehensive plan, and as they go along in the day to day activities of their business they get bogged down with coping with the business, lose revenue and fail o expand.

  • As you get going and start to hit your goals, and progress across your plan, you need to revise your plan, set new goals and update your plan of activities. Each milestone that you hit can bring in new capabilities and opportunities, so your plan has to be up to date and utilize all that you have accomplished to help you expand further.

  • The point above is very important for long term survival of your business. Large businesses as well as small ones come across the situation where they don't revise their plan. Businesses that have been in business for over 100 years suddenly disappear as a result.

 For example:

  • B.Altman's department stores closed its doors after 124 years of business and a number of other large and small businesses routinely become inefficient, lack direction, fail to see what is coming up ahead and do not adjust their plan to handle what is coming up and end up in financial trouble.

  • One of our previous clients had $ 30 mil. invested in their company, obtained a $ 35 mil. government contract and had an additional multi-million dollar investment put into the Company. They brought in a venture capital group and at their request terminated their relationships with their consultants. The company decided to go public on the Amex exchange and as a result did a reverse merger (a public company took them over as a way of them shortcutting an Initial Public Offering (IPO)). Their stock was at $ 10 per share at one point and shortly after it went down to 44 cents. Raising or having money is no substitute for comprehensive planning. You can lose large amounts of money as a result of failure to plan correctly.

  • Add to this recent economic conditions and you need to really be able to adjust your planning as things that worked before don't necessary continue to work.

  • Lehman Brothers was in business for over 140 years. Dr. Knight, one of our founders and a former board of director of one of the companies we consult, Mr. Gumport, both used to work for Lehman Brothers. Mr. Gumport was an analyst with Lehman Brothers and was ranked #1 by Wall Street Journal in Earnings Accuracy and had conducted over $ 5 bil. in financing with Lehman. Lehman failed to see the upcoming changes in the economy, took riskly positions in departure from its past policies and in an instant went from a company that had conducted $ 400 bil. in business that year to bankrupt.

  • The smaller your business, the better you planning has to be, since you can’t afford to lose money. Lager businesses, to stay competitive, efficient and ahead of their competition, need to also have a well thought out business plan. The plan needs to be  adjusted based on magnitudes of expansion, market conditions, market opportunities and a number of other factors affecting the business.

  • Knight Mitchell can help you create a comprehensive plan for your business that will keep you expanding, efficient and ahead of your competition. We will also help you conduct surveys and research and analyze the relevant data, recognize existing trends and predict future trends based on the data, keeping you ahead of the curve and helping you adjust your business plan based on what you have already accomplished which puts you in a new plateau as well as expected trends based on data analysis.
